JOHN DAVIS (1936–1999) was a pioneer of Australian environmental and conceptual art. Critically acclaimed during his lifetime as a sculptor of profound sensitivity, he possessed a keen awareness of the elemental forces of nature and a great concern for the impact of human activity on the environment. Davis’s acclaim reached international heights as he represented Australia at prestigious events such as the Venice Biennale and the Indian Triennale in 1978, along with the Osaka Triennale in 1992.
