PETER CALLAS holds a distinctive position as one of Australia’s earliest and most dedicated digital artists. His pioneering career marks a crucial yet often overlooked period in art—a time when many artists found it difficult to keep pace with the exponential technological advancements in image making. In 2004, Callas asked “I’m wondering whether we feel a nostalgia for these old means of production yet. Nostalgia for the visible pixel. So square!”. What Callas was wondering in 2004 has evolved into a significant area of art historical research today—the glitchy calm before the imminent rise of the digital realism.
