IMANTS TILLERS is announced as the winner of the Gold Award 2014. As Queensland’s richest painting prize, Tillers is awarded $50,000 and his winning painting, Ephiphany, will be part of the Rockhampton Art Gallery collection. Gallery Director Tracy Cooper-Lavery said, “Imants Tillers is one of Australia’s most important artists and this work is a significant addition to the Gallery’s growing collection of contemporary Australian art. The painting pays homage to one of Australia’s great artists, Ian Fairweather. Tillers explains his “attraction to the layering of Fairweather’s enigmatic and spiritual paintings which are neither fully abstract nor figurative” and makes reference to Fairweather’s painterly approach by “capturing and perhaps amplify the distinctive and transcendental ‘blue’ colour which frequently appears in his work.” The exhibition runs from 5 July – 31 August 2014.
